National Signing Day was an exciting time for the Eagles. Two noteworthy athletes committed to play for the college of their choice – Liam Bunnell ’17 as a punter for Sam Houston State University and Fielding Davis ’17 as a linebacker for Wheaton College.
For Liam, his lifelong dream to play football at the collegiate level gave him the extra drive to work hard in the sport he loves so much. Liam considered his long-term football goals when deciding to play at SHSU. When he learned that the SHSU head coach brings in NFL special teams coordinators to observe the players, Liam was sold.
His advice for younger athletes wanting to play a college sport: “Start training now,” Liam said. “Your end goal should always be greater than what you think you’re capable of.”
For Fielding, pursuing a career in baseball seemed to be the right direction, but God showed him a new path through his passion for football. When he visited Wheaton, he knew immediately that it was the place he needed to be. “God led me there without a doubt,” Fielding explained. “The Christian foundation of the school and the quality of the football program were the determining factors for me.”
Coach Terry Pirtle beamed with pride as his players sat in front of family, friends and faculty during the well-attended signing. “Liam is a fierce competitor who will battle for a spot on the field as soon as he arrives on campus next fall,” Coach Pirtle said. As for Fielding, “The passion he has for the game and his teammates will be very impactful for the Wheaton football program.”
Congratulations to our talented athletes! We will be cheering you on from home next year.
