Going for Gold

For their first ever competition, the Golden Girls attended the TAPPS Spirit Championship in December, held at the Arlington Convention Center in Arlington, Texas. They competed their team pom and team kick routines against several other private high schools in the state. The Golden Girls’ performances were admired by all and even live streamed so that their friends and family could cheer them on at home. The team impressed both the community and the judges, finishing sixth overall in the state.

In their second and final contest of the season, the Golden Girls traveled on Saturday, January 28, to compete in the Marching Auxiliaries contest held at South Houston High School. After a long day of competition, the sweat and hours of practice paid off. The Golden Girls walked home with the highest praises and awards of the day.

In addition to the team numbers, the Golden Girls competed two ensembles. The Golden Girls’ small ensemble, Hamilton, placed first runner-up. The group of girls in this dance devoted countless hours of time and energy outside of their regular practice to perfect their piece. The lyrical ensemble, Oceans, was made up of a group of dancers who auditioned for the piece and also spent hours outside of practice to prepare for competition. This group took home the first place award.

In addition, freshmen Summer Conkling and Caroline Carlyle’s first place solos landed them spots in the Parade of Champions, which took place at the beginning of the awards ceremony. Out of 27 other soloists from large public schools, Summer placed first in the 15-16 year old division. Caroline competed against seven other soloists and placed first in the 13-14 year old division.

"We are so proud of how well the girls performed during our inaugural competition season,” exclaimed coaches Brittney Ford and Ashley Wright. “The Golden Girls radiated Christ through every performance and represented Second Baptist School in the highest regard."
