On Wednesday, August 15, SBS families excitedly returned to campus for the first day of school. Shortly after students were settled into their classrooms, the entire community came together in the Worship Center for this year’s Convocation. Once class flags were neatly placed in a semi-circle surrounding the stage and students were seated, Head Prefect Fielden Baker ‘19 addressed the community. He encouraged students to see their time at SBS differently and to not take it for granted, to see its worth and importance.
“At Second Baptist School, you are surrounded by people of wisdom with knowledge to share. Get to know them. At Second Baptist School, you are presented with opportunities to receive a great education. Ask questions. Take full advantage of the chance you have to learn to understand clearly, to think deeply, to judge wisely. At Second Baptist School, you are supported by a community of faith. Become part of it. At Second Baptist School, you are encircled by people seeking to follow Christ authentically. Observe them, approach them, talk with them, get to know them, learn alongside them.”
At the conclusion of Fielden’s address, Dr. Davis welcomed 13 students to the stage as he spoke. These students illustrate the K-12 education one receives at SBS. “I believe Second Baptist School does the best job of preparing students for college and for the rest of their lives,” said Dr. Davis. “I believe this is true because our entire school is aligned behind the passion and mission!”
Dr. Davis concluded with these words, “The SBS education is built on three very important values:
1) A Christ-centered education rooted in the Word of God
2) A pursuit of excellence in all we do
3) A caring community
This year, I challenge us to be united as ONE in Christ.”
As a school community, WE are ONE. From the first day of school to the last and each day in between, let us write the words of Romans 15:5-6 on our hearts.
May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Christ Jesus had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 15:5-6
