Eighth Grade Promotion is a treasured tradition for the upper classmen of SBS middle school. In this moment, students are recognized for their leadership and charged to remain steadfast in their faith and stay true to who they are as they enter upper school. According to Head Female Representative Naomi Konuma ‘22, “Through all our experiences in middle school, we have discovered the young men and women God has called us to be.”
The ceremony consisted of words of wisdom and hope from our eighth grade representatives, Head of Secondary Education Tim Wainright, Promotion speaker Hailie Durrett ‘09 and a prayer over the Class of 2022 by eighth grade Bible teacher Bo Towns. According to Head Male Representative Will Brookby ‘22, “SBS has been the pillar for my walk with Christ.” Eighth graders received their promotion certificates and eighth grade devotionals and look toward the future with thankfulness and gratitude for their middle school years.
Promotion speaker Hailie Durrett ‘09 left our soon-to-be freshmen with this: “For the next four years before you leave for college, I urge each one of you to cherish those around you. The teachers and coaches here and your family are a God-given safety net for you in this time, creating space for you to take risks without being alone when you fall flat. Never take for granted the fact that the people in your community right now are chosen by God to surround you and to build you up in this time.”
