SBS choir and band students ended the year with their incredible spring concerts.
This year, our musical students grew in their talents and abilities and displayed their gifts at the Spring Instrumental Concert on May 12, and the Spring Choir Concert on May 16. In both concerts, audiences were entertained with recognizable tunes, energetic melodies and plenty of personality.
Spring Instrumental Concert
Band members welcomed the audience to a “night at the movies” in which every song played was taken from a popular film; clips of the movie were played simultaneously. Senior Will Echols and his father worked behind the scenes to time each song and movie clip perfectly.
Director of Instrumental Music Kendel Hickenbottom said he has been wanting to do a movie-themed concert for several years and was excited to realize his vision. Sixth grade band performed hits such as the Mission Impossible theme song, “Circle of Life” from The Lion King and “The Final Countdown” from Rocky IV. Next, the seventh grade through upper school band wowed with popular songs from Avengers, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Incredibles, Jurassic Park, Star Wars and more! The concert ended on a high note with “Don’t Stop Believin’!”
Kendel Hickenbottom said, “It was such a fun night. We have amazing students who put on a great show. Thanks to them for their hard work and to the band parents who helped with decorations and set up.”
Spring Choir Concert
Ushering in the last full week of the 2021-2022 school year, the Spring Choir Concert was a memorable evening. A mix of traditional and modern selections delighted the audience throughout the show. Soloists had opportunities to shine alongside impressive large group performances.
Freshmen Choir began the concert with several favorites, including “Fly Me to the Moon” and “Forever Young.” Vision Choir followed and wowed with “A Thousand Years” and a bouncy, solo-filled rendition of “Waving Through a Window.” Next, the Reflection Choir performed many incredible songs, including two well-known songs, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and “Seasons of Love.” The students came together, combining all choirs to end the night with an emotional performance of “Lovely Day” with soloists Dami Briggs ‘23 and Kendall Felton ‘22.
Our 40 graduating senior choir students received much-deserved recognition. At the end of the concert, Director of Choral Music Becky Martin awarded Jett Motley ‘22 and Grace Lunsford ‘22 Oustanding Senior awards, and Tanner Chapman ‘22 accepted the Director’s Award for Service. Seniors ended the night with their Class of 2022 Senior Showcase, truly a reflection of their God-given talents.
From the Director of Arts Cindy Blades
Director of Instrumental Music Kendel Hickenbottom held his final concert of the year, inspiring young musicians through his movie night theme full of highly popular, recognizable music. Mr. H's magnetic and creative execution of the concert was enjoyed by a full house of instrumental music patrons. We are thankful for Mr. Hickenbottom’s innovative and charismatic leadership.
We are blessed to have a master teacher and director for nine years now at SBS, Director of Choral Music Ms. Becky Martin. With choirs totaling over 160 members, the Spring Choir Concert and Senior Showcase concluded a wonderful year of choral music. The touching conclusion to the final concert of 2022 was when the many alumni joined the choirs for “The Blessing.” We are "blessed" to have Ms. Martin leading our choral department.
Finally, thank you to our wonderful families, dedicated parents and Arts Patrons members and board for their outstanding support of the arts at SBS this year.
