Spring Sports Recap 2021

A look back at the 2021 SBS spring sports season!
In a whirlwind wrap-up to an unforgettable year, student athletes took home multiple state championships this spring for Second Baptist School.

"Second Baptist School had a stellar spring season of athletics in 2021,” said Athletic Director Mike Walker. “Our baseball and softball teams were among the very best teams in the state. Baseball finished a very tough district season undefeated as district champions in a year with strong competition. Softball finished second in the district, but then went on to navigate the playoffs and finish off the season at TAPPS DII State Champions!”

Our track, golf and tennis teams also had great spring seasons sending multiple athletes to district, regional and state competitions. Walker continues, “Most of all, I was thrilled to see lots of parents and fans show up to spring events to cheer on our Eagles. We finished strong and we are looking forward to an even better 2021-2022."

Softball
Without a doubt, one of the all time highs of the 2020-2021 school year in SBS athletics was the softball team winning the TAPPS state title! “The state softball championship meant so much to this team. I’m excited for the athletes - this is their championship; they earned it every step of the way, and it truly could not have happened to a better group of student athletes. Watching their celebration was incredibly fulfilling,” said coach Brandy Mardis.

Baseball
This baseball season was marked by the opening of the new turf field and determination to prove their worthiness by a talented group of players. “Watching this team evolve as the season went along was fulfilling as a coach,” said coach Rayner Noble. “Going undefeated in district play was definitely a highlight.”

Senior and Prairie-View A&M commit, Alex Diaz shared, “Having the opportunity to represent Second Baptist School on the baseball field this year was truly an honor and a blessing. The greatest highlight of the baseball season this year for me was Spring Swing. It was so cool to see how the SBS community came out to support our baseball team, and we secured a big win at home that night.”

Our dances this year were very difficult and took a lot of practice to master and we gave it just that.

“The highlight that stood out this year was definitely the TAPPS tournament playoff when Patrick Elder ‘22 advanced into the Regional tournament. He was tied for tenth place after 18 holes, and only 10 players advance to regionals. Patrick went into a sudden-death playoff against a player from Woodlands Christian Academy and hit two great shots on the first playoff hole to clinch his spot. It was very nerve racking for him, but he handled it like a pro!” said coach Jenny Murdock.
