Second Baptist School volleyball competed in the first athletic competition on campus in six months, earning us wins for the first matches of the season.
Excitement was in the air Tuesday, September 15, as our athletes and coaches, families and fans returned to the gym for the first sports competition since March. Our talented Eagle volleyball teams competed to not only start off the fall season but also kick off the return of sports to our Second Baptist School campus. Director of Athletics Mike Walker was moved by the return of athletic competition at SBS, expressing gratitude to everyone who made it possible, including Dr. Davis’ courage, our coaches’ dedication, the devoted faculty who put safety procedures in place and, last but not least, the resiliency and spirit of our students.
Varsity and JV volleyball teams won their games, starting off the season with a boost of morale and camaraderie. Following safety guidelines, spectators cheered on the Eagles, players donned masks during play and game equipment was sanitized throughout the sets. We’re working together and finding our new normal for athletic competitions in 2020!
Head Coach Sue Berg has been looking forward to finally getting the competitions underway. She is happy with the win, saying, “Being our first match, I am pleased with the way that we played. I see the areas for improvement, but I like where we are at this point.” Regarding her elite varsity team, Sue says, “It’s a new team, but we have a lot of veterans. They had a great experience last year, both positive and negative. Those experiences will get us further along this season. It’s time to compete, and I am ready to see their hard work on the court!”
“Tuesday night was the first athletic competition on our campus in over six months. God is at work on our campus and I’m thrilled for the opportunity to work alongside such great people and with such amazing student athletes.”
