“The 2019 TAPPS State Swim Meet was held Thursday, February 7, at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium in Mansfield, Texas,” said Coach Mark Hahn. “Despite being a rebuilding year, this turned out to be another exciting and amazing season for our swimmers. The women’s team finished in fifth place and the men’s team placed fourth. We had 13 swimmers that qualified for the state meet.”
Swimmers who competed at state included:
- Women’s team: Luella Bakker-Barrink ‘22, Maycie McDonald ‘21, Savannah Neal ‘21, Sophie Newell ‘19, Kallie Steelman ‘19, Chloe Tondera ‘20
- Men’s team: Ryan Calderon ‘20, Spencer Locascio ‘21, Grant Mueller ‘20, Yuhuan Pan ‘19, Michael Towne ‘20, Jefferson Tramell ‘21, Brandon Young ‘22
Girls 200 Medley Relay (Sophie Newell, Savannah Neal, Luella Bakker-Barrink, Kallie Steelman) placed fifth, dropping 2.5 seconds from their record.
Boys 200 Medley Relay (Yuhuan Pan, Grant Mueller, Spencer Locascio, Michael Towne) placed fourth, dropping 3.3 seconds from their record.
Boys 200 Free Relay (Grant Mueller, Michael Towne, Ryan Calderon, Brandon Young) placed third, receiving a bronze medal and dropped 2 seconds off their record.
Girls 400 Free Relay (Luella Bakker-Barrink, Maycie McDonald, Kallie Steelman, Sophie Newell) placed third and brought home a bronze medal.
For the fourth year in a row, Sophie Newell ‘19 was named the 2019 Top Eastern Regional Swimmer. Additionally, she was named the 2019 Rollins Female Swimmer. Sophie broke the SBS varsity record in the girls 100 breaststroke.
On the men’s team, sophomore Spencer Locascio ’21 finished in second place in the boys 50 free and the boys 100 fly, winning the silver medal in both events.
“I’m looking forward to next year already but will miss the four seniors on the team this year: Sophie Newell, Kallie Steelman, Yuhuan Pan and Ethan Henderson,” said Hahn. “Best wishes wherever God leads you in the future.”
