Distinguished Speaker Luncheon

The Honorable James A. Baker, III, has served in senior government positions under three United States Presidents, including serving as the nation’s 61st Secretary of State under President George Bush and as the nation’s 67th Secretary of the Treasury under President Ronald Reagan.

Baker’s memoir -- Work Hard, Study … and Keep Out of Politics! -- was published in October 2006. Baker received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981 and has been the recipient of several awards for public service, including Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson Award and Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government Award. Baker serves as honorary chairman at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy.

Baker was born in Houston, Texas, in 1930. He and his wife, the former Susan Garrett, currently reside in Houston and have eight children and 18 grandchildren.

The Distinguished Speaker Luncheon is held each fall in honor of our faculty and staff, and serves as an outreach to the community as we include parents, grandparents, alumni and friends. All proceeds from the annual luncheon go directly to pay for Christmas gifts for Second Baptist faculty members and salary increases in the following year.
During the luncheon, we also take the opportunity to honor an alumnus for their contributions and alumni parents for their support of Second Baptist School over the years.
