Unfinished Business: A Historic Season for SBS Women’s Soccer
Resilient. Dominant. Unforgettable. The 2024-2025 Second Baptist School varsity women’s soccer team embodied these words, making history as TAPPS 6A state runner-up and delivering the best season in program history. With a remarkable 21-2-1 record, the Eagles soared through the season, claiming an undefeated district championship and a thrilling trip to the TAPPS DII State Championship Game.
Their journey to the championship was full of grit and heart. After a dramatic overtime victory against Lutheran South Academy in the regional round, the Eagles advanced to Waco for the state tournament. In the semifinals against Emery/Weiner, they battled through 100 minutes of play before triumphing in a sudden-death penalty shootout—thanks to a game-winning stop by goalkeeper Jeannie Hollingshead ‘28.
“I ended up saving the shot, and the second it reached my hands, it hit me—we were going to State,” said Hollingshead. “Watching my teammates run up to me to celebrate and the smiles on everyone's faces was a moment I will never forget.”
The championship game against Fort Worth All Saints was a true test of perseverance. Down a goal late in the match, Peyton Walsh ‘26 delivered a crucial assist to Berkley Blount ‘27, who buried the equalizer with under three minutes left, sending the game into double overtime.
“This team was united by a deep trust in one another,” said Madison Kalife ‘26. “Whenever we were in a tough spot, we turned to each other and to prayer for encouragement.”
That spiritual strength and unity carried them through their historic season. Blount reflected on the heart behind their success:
“I think our relationships off the field helped us communicate on the field, ultimately making us more successful,” said Blount. “Whenever I was down on myself, my teammates always found a way to cheer me up. Our faith in each other helped us stay positive and get through hard games.”
For Carson Patterson ‘27, the season was about more than soccer—it was about purpose.
“We knew we would not make it to state if we were playing for our own individual glory, so instead we banded together,” Patterson said. “The unity our team carried was an encouragement. When we won, we celebrated together, and when we lost, we comforted each other, knowing that we had done it all for the Lord's glory.”
Head Coach Geoff Brooks saw that spirit of determination in every practice and game.
“This season, the biggest lesson I learned from the girls was to level up and never quit,” said Brooks. “At the start of the season, we were hopeful and determined, but I didn’t realize I had a team of overachievers."
“From freshmen stepping into key roles to upperclassmen leading with excellence, every player on this team elevated their game. Whether it was pushing through sprints at the end of practice, equalizing a game in the final minutes, or securing a last-minute victory over a district rival, they gave everything they had.”
While the season ended just short of a title, their impact was far greater than any trophy.
“Even though we placed second at state, it’s not just about winning,” said Blount. “It’s about building friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.”
This season raised the bar for Second Baptist School women’s soccer. A championship team marked by excellence, unity and purpose, they left a legacy—and they’re not finished yet.
