Tommy Tune Awards 2019
After an impressive six Tommy Tune Award nominations in March, the Theatre Under the Stars Tommy Tune Awards show was held recently and Second Baptist School brought home two well-deserved awards.
The Tommy Tune Awards show is an exciting night with musical numbers and talented students from all over the Houston area (public and private schools) teaming up for an unforgettable show. Performing alongside the seven other nominees for Best Actress was Emily Cagle ’20. Emily prepared for her role as Kim MacAfee by watching different versions of Bye Bye Birdie and adapting the character as her own. She was excited to reprise her role for a new audience at the Tommy Tune Awards show.
Best Featured Performer – Zac Decker ’21 for the role of Harvey Johnson
“Winning Best Featured Performer was a huge blessing, and it came as a surprise because the other people that were nominated had songs and tons of lines,” said Decker. “I am truly grateful for even being able to dance the opening number. Performing at The Hobby Center was an eye-opener to me for theatre. I met so many people that love doing what I love and I made tons of great friends.”
Best Supporting Actress – Maddie Erwin ’20 for the role of Mrs. Mae Peterson.
“Winning Best Supporting Actress was fantastic. It was good affirmation of all the work, time and effort that I put into the role,” said Erwin. “I was skeptical when I was first cast in this role because I’ve never done comedy and I’ve never done anything on this magnitude. It was great to be acknowledged that I did a good job.”
Tommy Tune Scholarship Award
Tommy Tune awarded scholarships to 20 talented students from a pool of over 100 applicants. We are proud to announce Jenna Bobbora ’19 as one of this year’s recipients. She will attend Texas Christian University in the fall to study musical theatre.
Join us in congratulating these talented students and the entire cast of Bye Bye Birdie for an excellent show.
