Teacher Feature | Mrs. Schweer

With homecoming festivities in full gear this week at Second Baptist, few teachers understood the significance of the event more than Mrs. Catherine Schweer ‘05. A proud SBS alumna, Mrs. Schweer now teaches fifth grade reading where she once walked the same halls. Being named Homecoming Queen her senior year, this week holds a special place in Mrs. Schweer's heart as she experiences this SBS tradition from a unique perspective. One that blends her memories as a student with her passion for teaching the next generation.

When asked what led her to return to SBS as a teacher, Mrs. Schweer expressed how God blessed her with a wonderful educational experience. “I felt called to provide for this generation of kids,” she said. “I truly loved my student experience at Second and couldn’t wait to return as a faculty member.” Her connection to the school still runs deep, as she remains close with many former classmates, teachers and coaches.

Since entering SBS to begin her first grade year in 1994, Mrs. Schweer has witnessed the school's growth and transformation. She notes one of the most significant changes has been the new children's building and the many technological advancements. Amidst the progress, the heart of the school is the same. “The culture of our community has stayed the same—Christ-focused, caring, supportive and fun!”

For this year’s homecoming festivities, Mrs. Schweer's excitement is driven by experiencing this week with her family and students. “I love sharing SBS traditions with my husband and three kids! We enjoy going to the football games to cheer on the Eagles! My girls love to watch the cheerleaders and Golden Girls on the sidelines.” One of her favorite memories from this week was getting to twin with her students during “Nerds and Smarties” dress-up day.

Mrs. Schweer’s homecoming experience is not just a celebration of the past but also a chance to create new memories with her students and family as they embrace the traditions she once cherished as a student. Having been a part of the SBS community for many years, Mrs. Schweer continues to make a lasting impact on the school, shaping the next generation with the same love and care she received.
