Teacher Feature | Mrs. Blades
Since 1981, Mrs. Blades has been a cornerstone of the SBS Arts Department. For over four decades, she has guided students through the transformative world of theatre, where creativity flourishes and confidence is built. Beloved by many, Mrs. Blades’ presence at SBS has made a lasting impact, not just on the stage but on the lives of countless students.
When asked why she is so passionate about teaching theatre, Mrs. Blades’ response perfectly encapsulates the way she leads her arts students. “Theatre causes high school students to step outside themselves and become more confident. They become equipped to do literally anything they want in a different occupation because they can speak extemporaneously, stand in front of an audience, and have the confidence to stand up for their opinions.”
For Mrs. Blades, theatre is much more than lines and stage directions; it’s about empowerment. She explains that theatre gives students the courage to be themselves, not who others want them to be. “They’re able to say no to things they should say no to because they are confident.” This unique approach to teaching has helped her students thrive both inside and outside the theatre, giving them tools applicable in every aspect of life.
“My favorite thing about teaching theatre is watching someone who joined because their mom made them and end up loving it—because they’ve found family, friends and a place where they can be funny, quirky, studious or whoever they truly are,” she shares. Mrs. Blades has created a culture where her students find an authentic community where they can be themselves.
Mrs. Blades's influence stretches far beyond the productions she directs. With her guidance, students learn the value of self-expression, the importance of confidence, and the power of being comfortable in their own skin. Whether on the stage or in life, Mrs. Blades gives her students the courage to take the spotlight.
