Teacher Feature | Mr. Ryden

When it comes to inspiring middle schoolers through theater, Mr. Cole Ryden does so with passion, purpose, and a heart for the Lord. As the seventh and eighth grade Advanced Theatre teacher and musical director at Second Baptist School, Mr. Ryden sees his work as far more than just directing productions, but about helping students grow in confidence and faith through performing arts.

After growing up in the Second Baptist Church community, Mr. Ryden was drawn to teaching at SBS because of the bold faith and supportive culture. “What draws me to SBS is the culture and way we can freely and boldly be unapologetically a believer and walk with others who are like minded,” he shared.

This year, Mr. Ryden directed the middle school production of Elf Jr., one of his favorite projects. “The students that I get to watch grow and flourish through the gifts that are placed in them. Working with middle schoolers is a challenge and a blessing. I don't take one day for granted, being able to help young people love and respect the arts! God created those gifts and abilities, and to watch students use them for the glory of God is the best part!” he said. Whether helping a student break through a confidence wall or step fully into a character, he finds joy in every step of the process.

Above all, Mr. Ryden challenges his students to give their best. “I ask my students to always try their hardest and to not hold back,” he said. “I would say I challenge them to push past what they think they can handle to find how far they actually can go!”
