Student Leadership Announced for 2020-2021

With much anticipation, the Prefect and Fellows positions for the 2020-2021 academic year were announced Friday, April 24, 2020, through a pre-recorded video from Head of School Dr. Don Davis and Head of Upper School Jon Konzelman. Second Baptist School fosters servant leadership in students at the junior and senior grade levels through the Prefect and Fellows programs. Candidates for these positions submitted applications and participated in rounds of Zoom interviews with executive staff members and teachers. Head of School Dr. Don Davis notes, “In the past two years, SBS has doubled the internship and mentorship opportunities provided to students.” 

Prefects and Fellows are student leaders who possess a high degree of commitment to Second Baptist School’s mission, passion and values. Prefects and Fellows are expected to demonstrate exemplary, Christ-like character and integrity through decisions and actions daily. All Prefects and Fellows are responsible for morale, school spirit and shaping student perception about what it means to be a student at SBS. 

Prefects are leaders capable of overseeing progress in their areas of influence and responsibility while striving to partner with the student body working in the school. Head of Upper School Jon Konzelman affirms, “Positive peer influence has a powerful impact on school culture. Prefects shape and reform what it means to be a student at SBS.”

The Fellows program offers exceptional students opportunities to develop leadership skills while working with various executive-level staff members. This program aligns students with an executive staff mentor for a year-long professional internship. Fellows learn first-hand the process of leading a major department within the school and are equipped with advanced skills prior to graduation.

“Leadership requires service to others,” states Mr. Konzelman. “I encourage the student body to come around these students and follow in their leadership. When we come together, we advance the mission of SBS: to think critically, live biblically and lead courageously.”
