Soaring Eagles: Leadership Starts Here

Second Baptist School believes true leadership is modeled after Christ: a life of service. Our mission to think critically, live biblically and lead courageously shapes students to be servant-leaders who influence others with compassion and conviction both in and beyond the classroom. Programs like the fourth grade Soaring Eagles highlight this calling, equipping students to see leadership not as a position but as a daily way of life.

Learning to Lead through Service
Soaring Eagles, our fourth grade student council, provides students with opportunities to grow as servant-leaders while making a meaningful impact throughout lower school. These students are challenged with questions such as, “What does leadership mean to you?”, “What does it mean to be a leader?” and “What are ways you can best serve lower school?” As they reflect on these questions, they are given tangible ways to put their answers into practice.

Throughout the year, students serve as prayer partners with PK3 students, lead worship in chapel, assist with lower school carpool, help in the lunchroom, lead pledges and announcements for their class and participate in service projects with both the Cancer Foundation and Kids’ Meals. As Soaring Eagles step into leadership, they learn to serve others and positively influence both the lower school and the community around them.

Growing in Confidence and Joy
As these students serve, they discover the joy of helping others and the fulfillment that comes from taking on new responsibilities. 

“A key part of Soaring Eagles is encouraging students to try something new. We constantly remind them that everyone feels nervous at first, but when they step out with their friends, they are often surprised to discover just how much fun it can be,” said Lorraine Koerner, who leads our Soaring Eagles. “Even at a young age, when students are entrusted with leadership roles and given the opportunity to serve others with a biblical purpose, they discover that they are not only capable of holding responsibilities, but they find joy in the process.”

Think, Live, Lead
Through Soaring Eagles, leadership goes beyond the classroom and grows into daily Christ-centered habits of service and leadership. Students are encouraged to push beyond their comfort zones and actively care for their community, embodying the SBS mission to think critically, live biblically and lead courageously.

“Through these experiences, Soaring Eagles learn that leadership is not just about responsibility. It’s about faith, service and discovering the joy that comes from helping others,” Lorraine said. “I truly believe we are planting seeds of leadership early, and I pray that the lessons they learn in Soaring Eagles about faith, service, courage and joy will carry with them throughout their years at SBS and beyond.”
