Shaping Future Leaders: Schools of Distinction at Second Baptist School
Learning from Experts: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice
Topics this semester have ranged from entrepreneurship to organ transplantation, showcasing the diversity and depth of the Schools of Distinction curriculum. Dean of the Schools of Distinction and Intro to Business teacher Dr. Jill Foote noted, “Every speaker brings something unique to the table, from creative exercises like startup innovation with Legos to discussions on stock analysis that equips students with practical tools and insights.”
Emma Cornelius ‘26 described Will Womble’s visit as a standout moment: “I really enjoyed when Mr. Womble came to speak! His interactive approach with Legos kept us engaged and made learning so much fun. Hearing how he’s used his God-given talents to start and grow businesses was incredibly inspiring—it showed me how faith can be a driving force in success.”
In the School of Sciences (medical track), students have explored surgical knot tying, emergency triage techniques, and hands-on simulations. Teacher Dr. Sal Parrino emphasized the value of these experiences, saying, “Students gain firsthand insight into the healthcare systems we rely on, whether through tying knots with an anesthesiologist or decoding prescriptions with a clinical pharmacist. The engagement and enthusiasm are inspiring to witness.”
Sarah Cela ‘26 shared her enthusiasm about the medical sciences class. “Hearing from so many medical professionals about their unique careers has been incredible. It’s eye-opening to learn about the variety of opportunities in the medical field. I also love working with the Anatomage table—it’s such an amazing tool! As a visual learner, it really helps me grasp concepts more effectively,” she shared.
Inspiring Faith Through Leadership
A common thread across both schools has been the openness of guest speakers about their faith journeys. Many professionals shared how Scripture guides their professional and personal lives, encouraging students to view challenges as opportunities for growth. “Most importantly,” Dr. Foote remarked, “these interactions emphasize our shared frailty, showing that even those at the top of their careers rely on a relationship with Christ for strength and guidance.”
Preparing the Next Generation of Christian Leaders
Students in the Schools of Distinction gain more than knowledge; they are being equipped to lead. Dr. Parrino explains, “Our goal is to develop the next generation of Christian professional leaders by putting students in contact with today’s leaders who inspire, educate, and prepare them to rise to the occasion.” These interactions bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, making abstract concepts tangible.
