Second Baptist School Welcomes New Men's Basketball Coach, Taylor Land

Second Baptist School is excited to welcome Taylor Land as the new head coach for our men's basketball team for the 2024–2025 season. A Texas native with a rich heritage in basketball, both as a player and a coach, Coach Land joins us with 12 years of collegiate coaching experience, including a notable five-year tenure at the University of the Incarnate Word. His profound dedication to the principles that define our community makes him an excellent fit for our program.

Taylor's basketball journey began at St. Edwards University in Austin, where he distinguished himself as a standout point guard. His prowess on the court led him overseas, where he played professionally for six years, gaining invaluable international experience and a broader perspective on the game. Returning to the United States, Taylor embarked on a coaching career that included significant contributions at UTRGV, St. Francis, and Incarnate Word, culminating in a pivotal role that helped lead Longwood University to the 2024 NCAA Tournament.

Influenced profoundly by his family's basketball legacy—his father, a longtime broadcaster for the San Antonio Spurs, and his mother, a celebrated high school basketball coach—Taylor has developed a coaching philosophy that emphasizes character building, spiritual growth, and discipline. These values resonate deeply with the principles of Second Baptist School. “I’ve learned the importance of striving for something greater than individual success," Land shared. "The selflessness, joy, discipline, and love essential for winning are also integral to my faith." At SBS, he is committed to nurturing these qualities among his players, ensuring they grow not only as athletes but as individuals aligned with our Christ-centered values.

Taylor's decision to shift his coaching career to the high school level was inspired by conversations with his brother, Cooper Land, who is also a head coach at a TAPPS school in Austin. These discussions reignited his passion for having a more formative impact on young athletes, aligning with our mission to equip students to think critically, live biblically, and lead courageously to impact the world for Jesus Christ.

"I am thrilled to serve as the next head basketball coach at SBS," said Coach Land. "It is rare to find such a community rooted in Christ with a program that strives for excellence. That combination resonated deeply with me. My wife and I are so grateful to Mike Walker and all those involved in the hiring process for such an opportunity. We cannot wait to join the Second Baptist family!" Land has been married to his wife, Stephanie, for four years. She is a Houston native who attended SBS until the fifth grade.

As we look forward to the upcoming season, Coach Land is actively engaging with players and their families, laying a solid foundation for a successful and transformative basketball program.

Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Coach Taylor Land as he begins his journey at Second Baptist School. We are confident that his expertise and values-driven approach will bring great success and honor to our Eagles basketball team.
