SBS Yearbook Wins an Award of Excellence

SBS Yearbook Wins an Award of Excellence

The SBS yearbook is a montage of memories, intricately placed together to paint the picture of our school family- our home. So, it seemed only fitting that the theme for our 2018-2019 yearbook should be Home; a theme that could encapsulate the atmosphere of Second Baptist School while effectively communicating the lively activities of the campus.

Editors-in-chief from last year, Cassie Thompson ’19 and Lily Halsell ‘19, worked hard to create this vision for this book. Throughout the year, staffers and editors labored diligently on the yearbook to ensure as many kids as possible were represented and that the book could be enjoyed by kindergarteners to SBS grandparents.

The yearbook team always says that the best part of creating the yearbook is seeing everyone’s animated reactions when they are finally delivered. But this year, there was an added bonus.

The SBS yearbook publishing company, Walsworth, announced the 2019 Second Baptist School yearbook was inducted into their Gallery of Excellence! This means the yearbook will be taken to Walsworth conventions and included in their promotional material, showing off the heartbeat of our school to their potential clients.

This yearbook, Home, was judged on the “quality examples of the theme, coverage, design, photography and copy” throughout the book. The yearbook is student-run and created under the guidance of upper school teacher Mrs. Kay Day. This means all aspects of the book, including design, copy and photography, are the work of SBS upper school students. The last time the yearbook team received this prestigious honor was in 2016. This award is setting a precedent for future generations of yearbook staffers and editors.

As a junior staffer working on Home, I was a copy-editor. I was in charge of all written material in the yearbook. But this year as a senior, I have the privilege of being one of the editors-in-chief for the whole yearbook. While this may seem a daunting task, I am honored to carry this legacy of excellence, especially since it is the last one I will contribute to as part of the yearbook staff, as I am college-bound.

I look forward to working with the 2019-2020 staffers and editors to create a yearbook focused on reflecting the past and enjoying those special moments that seem to fly by in the blink of an eye.

The Class of 2020 is getting excited about future memories, but, of course, we are nostalgic for our past years of upper school and SBS experiences.

Therefore, I hope you will join us in our excitement for the 2019-2020 yearbook: Retrospect.
