SBS Hosts Houston Private School Classic

SBS Hosts Houston Private School Classic

Second Baptist School was proud to host the inaugural year of the Houston Private School Classic basketball tournament. This premier basketball event featured the top private school talent in Houston, competing over three days from December 28 through December 30.

Thanks to many event workers and volunteers, the 2020 Houston Private School Classic was a huge success. “Special events like this one are foundational to the student-athlete experience,” says Director of Athletics Mike Walker, “and we were thrilled to provide an elite tournament for the coaches and athletes of 12 of the top private school basketball programs in Houston.” Eleven teams came from the Houston area with one school joining from San Antonio, Texas. Student athletes were eager to compete and participate in a tournament with such a collegiate feel.

Coach Walker goes on to say, “The past few months have been tough for everyone, and it gave me great joy to see parents, coaches and athletes safely enjoying a tournament atmosphere.   This tournament will continue to attract the absolute best private school teams in the state. I’m excited to see it grow!"

SBS basketball coach Kevin Mouton reports that the tournament received rave reviews through the city. He says, “The competition was excellent. We had some of the top schools in the state participating, and they all confirmed they will be back next year.”

VYPE Media’s Joshua Koch interviewed SBS basketball player Jordan Williams ‘22, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, a selection of the best players in the tournament as voted on by the coaches. Jordan shared about his experience in the tournament saying, “I’m really thankful. My team put me in the position to succeed, and all the coaches set me up to go out and do my best. I’m just really happy and thankful God allowed me to do this, especially during Covid when a lot of people aren’t able to play right now.”

Williams is a junior in his first year at Second Baptist School. When asked what it’s been like coming to SBS, he says, “I really love it here. It’s been like a family experience for me. Everyone is very accepting and joyful. Coach Mouton has really put me in a great position to succeed. I love him as a coach, and love playing basketball at SBS.”
