SBS Cross Country Soars at Home Meet

SBS Cross Country Soars at Home Meet

Second Baptist School’s cross country team hosted its annual meet at Second Baptist’s West Campus. The team’s top competitors were in attendance: Fort Bend Christian, Lutheran South Academy and St. Thomas Episcopal.

The top 5 SBS runners placed 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th, which means they all placed in the top 10. And according to varsity cross country coach Roxanne Worley, “Had this been a scoring meet, we would have most definitely placed 1st.”

Coach Worley went on to say, “I'm looking forward to my runners finishing the season strong with personal best times for both the men’s team and the women’s team. This is a very special group of runners. I have eight senior athletes. Six of them have been running for me since the sixth grade! These seniors are: Isaac Baker, Jackson Bishop, Elijah Craig, Luke Johnson, Kara Powell, Jacob Skyles, Victoria Smith and Grant Wilson.”

According to Victoria Smith '21, "Our home meet was so much fun! With a tremendous turnout in support, including the Golden Girls, friends and family, all the participating runners were highly encouraged. Fueled by all of the energy, I placed 5th in the varsity women's race. This Saturday was the launching pad for the team, and we expect to have an extremely strong season!"

Looking to the future and the rest of the season, Coach Worley said, “This summer, my XC guys approached me with some very lofty goals. They would love to win state this year. In 2018, they placed 8th in state. In 2019, they placed 4th. Now they are looking to take 1st place. With some hard work, determination and of course talent, I hope and pray they can accomplish this goal.”

Though this season may not look exactly like it has in year’s past, this team has persevered with gratitude. According to Coach Worley, “We are all so grateful and blessed that we get to have a season at all!”
