Real Topics. Real Voices. Real Impact.

Real Topics. Real Voices. Real Impact.

Each spring, juniors in Mrs. Shannon Brooks’ AP English Language and Composition class take the stage for their culminating project: a TED Talk-inspired presentation that challenges them to think deeply, write persuasively and speak with purpose.

This multi-week assignment begins with students identifying a topic they care about—something that matters to them personally. From there, they research, reflect, draft essays, design visual aids and rehearse their delivery. The final product is more than a speech; it is a window into what today’s students are passionate about, curious about and wrestling with.

This year’s lineup featured thought-provoking topics such as:

  • “Will Hydrogen Cars Make You Rich?” by Clayton Hedges
  • “Manipulation: The Art of Mind Control” by Josh Rhames
  • “Why God” by Mady Schmidt
  • “The Dangers of Criminal Psychology” by Emma Hodge
  • “Is Concentrating Really That Hard?” by Quin Harder
  • "The Importance of Laughter" Grace Wehring
  • “Reel Influence” by Mac Northrup
  • “Is What We Envy Actually Real?” by Ava Kate Maffet
  • “9 Types of Intelligence” by Canon Toon

Topics ranged from psychology and pop culture to faith, wellness and emerging technology—reflecting the diversity of thought and experiences within the Class of 2026. But beyond the subject matter, what stood out most was the depth of conviction, clarity of voice and courage each student brought to his/her presentation in front of peers, faculty and staff.

At Second Baptist School, we are committed to equipping students to think critically, live biblically and lead courageously. The TED Talk project is a clear reflection of our mission. It cultivates not only academic excellence but also character, confidence and the ability to communicate truth with clarity and conviction.

Each student brought a unique perspective to the stage, reminding us that when students are invited to lead from their God-given strengths and convictions, they rise to the challenge—with thoughtfulness, boldness and purpose.
