Preparing for Victory | Eagle Week 2024

“Every…single…day.” In anticipation of the new school year, football, volleyball, cheer, golden girls and cross country teams at Second Baptist School geared up for the kick-off of the fall sports season. Eagle Week marks the start—bringing a renewed sense of focus, determination, and camaraderie as student athletes commit to perseverance and excellence in the season ahead. Here’s a look at how SBS coaches and athletes are preparing for more than just a successful season.

Integrating faith and spiritual growth into the team culture is a priority at SBS. Varsity Football Head Coach and Director of Student Impact Beck Brydon emphasizes the importance of training athletes in “mind, body and spirit.” Understanding that God has created us in this way, “neglecting any of these three components is not holistic training or education.” To develop athletes in these areas, Brydon urges that “every single day” is a missed opportunity to continually develop athletes physically, mentally and spiritually “if we are not fully immersed in Truth.”

The spiritual development of student athletes, above every other accolade, is the leading desire of coaches at Second Baptist School. Director of Athletic Performance Nick Mascioli furthers the idea of the importance of spiritually developing athletes, pointing to the words of David describing the righteous man in Psalm 1: “He is like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruits in season, and its leaves do not wither.” Coach Mascioli trains student athletes while reminding them that “rooting yourself deep in the word of God” and devoting time to “intimacy in prayer with Him” allows athletes to be “grounded in all facets of life.” Coach Mascioli desires to constantly remind students that “their source of strength is not in themselves but solely in Christ alone."

This season, we eagerly anticipate not just the development of student athletes in their sports but, more importantly, we look forward to their spiritual growth in their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Join us in cheering on and supporting our SBS Eagles this upcoming season!
