Play Ball!

The sun is setting, the air is crisp, the sound of footsteps pound through metal bleachers, the National Anthem comes on and suddenly the players and crowd stand at attention as they settle in for America’s favorite pastime - baseball!

This past Friday night’s springtime weather set the stage for the highly anticipated turf donor appreciation night and baseball season opener on the Michael B. Stevens Field. Thanks to the generosity of Jerry Dearing and countless other donors, the SBS Eagles began their season on a state-of-the-art turf. 

“New buildings and upgraded facilities don’t change lives in and of themselves, but they are tools to be used by godly faculty, staff and coaches in their pursuit of changed lives. Together, we are building a strong community that puts Christ at the center of our pursuit of excellence,” said Head of School Dr. Davis when asked about the importance of the new baseball turf. He went on to say “The money was raised and the work done in the midst of COVID. This field tested our resolve; while others were parolized with fear it was the courageous leadership of men like Jerry Dearing and Dr. Young that enables us to pursue excellence in the face of adversity.” 

Before the game began, Dr. Ed Young took the mound to welcome the opposing team Fort Bend Christian calling them “family” as they joined together to celebrate this momentous occasion for SBS baseball. Dr. Young made a poignant comment as he reminded the crowd of the importance of Christian education in young people, “You can’t get home without stopping on first.” - the reminder that we cannot get to heaven without first accepting Jesus into our hearts. Winning the game might have been on the forefront of the players’ minds, but Dr. Young encouraged the crowd to play for the glory of God, not just themselves.

SBS defeated Fort Bend Christian Academy 5 to 4. After Fort Bend Christian jumped out to a 4-0 lead, SBS climbed back into the game and eventually grabbed the lead and hung on behind great pitching and timely hitting. Starting Pitcher, Bryce Calloway '21, finished the game with 12 strikeouts. Bryce has committed to play for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette next year. In addition, sophomores Luke Pettite and Ty Baker finished out the game to help secure the victory. 

The next home baseball game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, versus Emery/Weiner.
