New #SBSfamily Members: Part 1

New #SBSfamily Members: Part 1

What is the #SBSdifference? Head of School Dr. Davis challenged our community at the beginning of the school year to Be the Difference. Our current families experience it daily and our new families quickly discover it. The SBS difference is intangible but always felt.

“We embody the difference we want to see in the world,” said Dr. Davis. “To be the leader God has called you to be, you must think critically, live biblically and lead courageously.” In a time when schools are being examined under a microscope, SBS offers hope to many searching for educational excellence in an authentic Christian community, a school true to its mission to think differently, live differently and lead differently in our ever-changing world.

The first in a three-week series, we will hear from the Zieben family about what has stood out in their first semester at SBS with their three daughters.

What led you to apply to Second Baptist School?

We were led to SBS through Second Baptist Church. When our long-time church home didn’t open back up in person during the pandemic, we decided to visit SBC. We joined Second Baptist Church in January of 2021, and on our tour, we learned about the school. We liked how much Christ played a role in the daily curriculum, the smaller class sizes, how happy all the students looked and the values that were being reinforced.

Dr. Davis's fearless and prayerful leadership through 2020 was a source of inspiration. We wanted our girls to attend a school that prioritized the mental and physical well-being of its students.

How was the transition to SBS for your family?

The transition to SBS has exceeded our expectations. The teachers and staff are amazing. They are very organized and have a strong support system in place that includes checking in on new families throughout the year. SBS is really like no other school. It is not only built on strong Christian values but has strong academics, athletic and arts departments.

What are some highlights of Christian education that you've experienced at SBS thus far?

Tricia Zieben: One of my biggest highlights was actually buying a Bible for the girls to use in Bible class. They come home weekly and learn their Bible verses which carries over to Lee and me.

Lee Zieben: Convocation was a highlight for me, where the whole school, as well as teachers and parents, convened in the Worship Center on the first day of school. The teachers surrounded all the students and prayed over them for the school year. That was such a special experience.

Have any faculty or staff stood out to your family in this first semester?

Mrs. Erin Johnson, fifth grade Bible teacher, is 100% a blessing to SBS and our family. She has been intentional about making sure Chloe transitioned well this year, and Chloe absolutely loves Bible class and Mrs. Johnson.

Can you share a memorable moment from your first semester at SBS?

I think the most memorable moments were the football games and pep rallies. There is really a sense of community. It's a feeling difficult to describe, but it feels like family and like nothing we have felt at any other school. It was also a great way to meet families and get involved.

We have finally found a school that is well-rounded and truly faith-based in everything they do. The main difference we have seen in our time so far at SBS is how happy our girls are at the end of each school day. Second Baptist School is really about the whole well-being of the child. They care about the mind, the heart and making connections both spiritually and academically.
