Mission Control to SBS!

Mission Control to SBS!

Students across the nation have been watching the Artemis II mission unfold on their screens, but today, our students experienced something far more extraordinary. Our fifth graders were given a rare, behind-the-scenes look at this historic journey as they heard directly from Lisa Voiles, SBS mom and Chief Training Officer for Artemis II. She brought the mission to life, sharing the incredible complexity of space travel and the intense preparation required to send humans farther into space than ever before.

Mrs. Voiles captivated students with questions that sparked their curiosity, from “How do astronauts eat in space?” to “What does the inside of a spacecraft really look like?” She pulled back the curtain on her own role at NASA, sharing how she helps prepare astronauts for the challenges of their long journey beyond Earth.

She also revealed the fascinating behind-the-scenes work most people never see, like training astronauts to exercise in zero gravity to preserve their strength and the fascinating details about the process of readjusting to Earth’s gravity when they return home.

Mrs. Voiles also reflected on how her years working in space exploration have deepened her understanding of God and His majesty in all creation. She explained to our students that as we explore space, we are reminded of God’s splendor in His creation of the earth, moon, planets and every star we see. She emphasized that, especially in this remarkable moment in history, we can see how God equips people with the curiosity, talent and courage to comprehend the wonders of space, design spacecraft, solve complex challenges, and, as seen in Artemis II, venture into the vast universe He created.
