Golden Girls Win 5A Dance State Championship

The Second Baptist School Golden Girls dance team claimed the TAPPS 5A Large Team State Championship, earning a Superior Rating and marking the program’s first state title since 2017.

The team performed both a lyrical and pom routine at the state competition, showcasing growth, precision and unity developed over the course of the season.

Led by head coaches Madelyn Whitehead and Jacqueline Rose, the Golden Girls rose to the challenge of increased difficulty and high expectations on the state floor.

“While we have always been proud of their consistency and excellence, finally winning the title after coming close for so many years adds a defining moment to the program,” Whitehead said. “They’ve performed at a high level for 10 years, and it’s incredibly special to celebrate that anniversary with a state championship.”

This championship was especially meaningful for the team’s seniors, three of whom had been pursuing the title throughout their high school careers. Senior captain Kambell Crites reflected on the journey and the moment the team’s name was announced.

“We’ve put in hours of hard work through early mornings, lunches and weekends, and what makes it worth it is the environment we have as a team,” Crites said. “When our name was called, we all burst into tears. After coming so close for years, it was overwhelming in the best way.”

Senior captain Tessa Garcia shared that the team’s pride went beyond the final results.

“Even before the awards were announced, we were proud of how we performed,” Garcia said. “The girls danced their hearts out, and we moved together as a team. Hearing our name called was such a special way to end senior year.”

Throughout the season, the Golden Girls remained focused on a deeper purpose. Their lyrical routine, Brighter Days, reflected the hope found in Christ, while Gold celebrated the program’s 10-year legacy.

“Not at any point did we need to redirect their mindset,” Whitehead said. “Their goal was always to bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ.”

The championship performance also brought individual recognition, with Ellen Klare Brown ‘26, Kambell Crites ‘26 and Tessa Garcia ‘26 named to the All-State First Team; Anna Kate Asby ‘27 earning All-State Second Team honors; and Caroline Morrisett ‘28 selected for High Kick Company.

Together, the Golden Girls’ achievement stands as a testament to perseverance, sisterhood and excellence on and off the floor.
