Freshman Retreat: What I Wish I Knew Entering High School

Freshman Retreat: What I Wish I Knew Entering High School

Four years ago, I, along with the rest of the class of 2027, traveled to Stoney Creek Ranch for our Freshman Retreat. This year, I got to go to Freshman Retreat again, but now as a senior and a Prefect. Each year, the Prefects attend the retreat as leaders. Our role is to get to know the freshmen, offer advice and pour into them as they begin their high school journey.

Over the two days, students participated in activities like swimming, pickleball, and, of course, a game of “Steal the Bacon” with a cow tongue. This long-standing tradition challenges students to work together and step outside of their comfort zone in a way that is certainly memorable! Beyond exciting activities, students received counsel from administrators, community through bonding exercises and encouragement from studying God’s word.

Before the retreat, the Prefects and I were asked to lead a session with the freshmen titled, “Words of Wisdom.” We wanted to make it fun. Rather than simply talking “at” them with cliché advice, we decided to share stories from our own high school experience. Reflecting on moments of stress, indecision, confusion, embarrassment and more, the six of us shared the actions we took in the midst of challenges, including a personal nervous breakdown in AP World History class during sophomore year. After sharing our experiences and vulnerability, we explained what we wish we’d done differently and advised the freshmen on how to navigate difficult situations.

The truth is: high school is not always going to be easy. In fact, it will likely be tough at times. Challenges, curveballs and moments of uncertainty will come. But what is also true is that the Lord is good! He uses every moment and trial to build us and deepen our dependence on Him.

Looking back on my freshman year, I wish I could tell myself that everything would work out so I could stop worrying. Matthew 6:33 calls us to “seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you,” a constant reminder that when we seek Christ, He always provides!
