Fall 2020 Sports Recap

Student athletes and coaches alike demonstrated resilience, determination and grit during the 2020 fall sports season. 

Director of Athletics Mike Walker shares, “At Second Baptist School, we recognize the tremendous value that sports play in the lives of young people. By the grace of God, we successfully navigated 15 weeks of practices and games, and I am so thankful for the cooperation of our Head of School Dr. Davis as well as the coaches, athletes and families.” Walker continues, “We had exciting games, district championships and even a state runner-up in cross country.”

Football

“We have some very talented players and coaches who have done a great job making adjustments with practices and staying safe to participate this season,” shares varsity football Coach Pirtle. The Eagles just won their eighth District Championship in a row and hope to proceed to the State Championship in December. 

Varsity football captains Michael DiCecco ‘21 and Finn Nicholson ‘21 share their most memorable moments from the fall season, saying, “Winning the district championship against Fort Bend Christian was the highlight of the season so far. All the hard work since summer training paid off at that moment” (Finn Nicholson). DiCecco adds, “The game against Lutheran South was a defining moment for our team. Since then, we have been dominating the district and have continued to get better and better.”

  • Eighth Grade: 0 wins, 4 losses
  • Seventh Grade: 3 wins, 2 losses

Volleyball

Head Coach Sue Berg comments on the fall volleyball season, saying, “I am very proud of our volleyball players for never giving up. They fought hard every match. The players were hard working, positive and very enjoyable to coach.”

Volleyball captain Bailey Ireland ‘21 describes a volleyball memory. “My favorite game we played was against Frassati Catholic High School.It was so much fun for me because I feel like it was the first game we all really showed up and fought. We all had so much energy and fun while working together and playing our best.”

  • Freshmen: 3 wins, 5 losses
  • Eighth Grade: 2 wins, 3 losses
  • Seventh Grade: 2 wins, 2 losses

Cross Country

The cross country team had a season of many personal accomplishments and top ten medals. The highlight of the season was freshman Lauren Baker placing second overall in the TAPPS 5A Womens’ 3200m race. Head Coach Roxanne Worley congratulates both the mens’ and womens’ varsity cross country teams for a season well done!

Victoria Smith ‘21 says reaching her personal best time at the district meet was “so fulfilling.” She finally accomplished the time she had always wanted throughout her cross country career.

Cheer

“Despite the circumstances that we are all living through in this season of life, the varsity cheer team continues to show spirit each day! We are blessed to have the opportunity to cheer for our amazing athletic teams in person,” says Head Coach Andrea Spence. 

Coach Spence continues, “Our practices, workouts and games are constantly filled with encouraging words, actions and love toward our teammates and school. The trait that I would use to describe the fall season is adaptability.” Captain Emma Gunn ‘21 shares an example, saying, “Adapting our homecoming routine was a great bonding experience for all of us and made me realize the strength and determination of our team. I love my team, and moments like that one will define our season.”
