Earnest Steps Onto the Alley Stage

Earnest Steps Onto the Alley Stage

One evening at Houston’s Alley Theatre became an unforgettable moment for the Second Theatre Company. For one show only, our students performed Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy The Importance of Being Earnest on the Neuhaus Stage. Presented as our TAPPS one-act competition piece, the production pushed students to prepare in just three weeks and adapt to the demands of performing on a thrust stage rather than the familiar proscenium.

Behind the Scenes of a Professional Theatre
Before stepping into the spotlight, students were invited behind the curtain of Houston’s most celebrated theatre. They toured the Alley’s 75,000-square-foot Center for Theatre Production, home to its scene, costume and prop shops. In the 17,000-square-foot scene shop, they watched preparations on sets for the upcoming production of The Da Vinci Code. They also stood beneath the theatre’s four-story fly loft and glimpsed the advanced backstage systems that make professional productions possible.

Rising to the Challenge
Performing on a thrust stage, where the audience surrounds the actors on three sides, demanded a new level of awareness and focus. Director Cindy Blades explained, “We really only had three weeks to rehearse once we knew we would be able to perform at the Alley. The entire show was blocked from a proscenium to a thrust.” With discipline and dedication, the cast embraced the challenge, delivering a production that reflected their preparation, growth and creativity.

A Touch of Legacy
This is not the first time The Importance of Being Earnest has graced the Second Baptist School stage. In 1983, under the direction of Cindy Blades, the play became part of our school’s story. It was performed again in 2020 in the C Gym theatre as part of the fall drama An Evening of One Acts: Bernice Bobs Her Hair and The Importance of Being Earnest. To see it return more than forty years after its first production, now on a professional stage, was a powerful reminder of how traditions continue and how each generation builds on the work of the last. What began decades ago on our campus was carried forward with fresh energy and new voices, tying past and present together in a meaningful way.

More Than a Competition
While the TAPPS competition set the stage, the experience was about much more. Students stepped into a professional theatre, stretched themselves in new ways and discovered what it takes to bring excellence to the stage.

Theatre at Second Baptist School is more than lines and costumes. It is a way for students to grow in courage, creativity and collaboration as they live out our mission to think critically, live biblically and lead courageously. This performance of The Importance of Being Earnest reminded us that theatre is not only entertainment but also a place where faith and artistry come together to shape lives.
