Community Shines at SBS

The Second Baptist School community shines brightest under the lights of the Athletic Fields - families gather to engage with each other on the playground, near the food trucks, in the stands and on the field. This small-town feel in a big city is replicated throughout the year at SBS through the various opportunities offered in arts, athletics and division level programming - giving each student the opportunity to fulfill the mission of SBS within a caring community.

On September 17 for the game versus Cypress Christian, the Office of Admissions encouraged the SBS community to invite friends, neighbors and family to Friday Night Lights. Guests in attendance were given free entry to the game as well as Chick-fil-A meal tickets. The Future Eagles Club, Dads Club, arts department, advancement department and academic team alongside the college guidance department hosted tables with engaging activities for families to learn more about the mission of SBS.

Director of Admissions Andrea Prothro shared, “There’s no better place to see the SBS community living out our core values than during Friday night football games. Students and parents come together to fellowship with each other while expressing their school spirit. We enjoyed getting to share our SBS family with prospective families.”

To further the pre-game excitement, SBS cheerleaders and Golden Girls hosted our inaugural Spirit Clinic, combining both cheer and dance into an energized afternoon with first through sixth graders learning jumps and moves from our talented dance and cheer teams. Prior to kick-off, our future cheerleaders and Golden Girls performed their newly learned skills on the football field. Golden Girls Coach Madelyn Whitehead stated, “We had over 100 girls sign up, and they were excited to be given the opportunity to showcase their talents to the crowd! The best part about hosting this clinic was the opportunity the upper schoolers had to build relationships with younger girls and mentor them through their love of cheer and dance.” 

SBS parents also appreciate the chance to participate in a schoolwide event alongside their children and other families. Current SBS parent Rebecca Knapp shares, “My girls always have so much fun doing these clinics. I love that they get to work with the older girls. SBS has added so much value to the school by including the littles in these clinics.”

To top off the evening, the SBS athletics department hosted Youth Football Night. The first 50 kindergarten through sixth grade students to arrive received an SBS football. All participants, under the direction of SBS football players and coaches, had a chance to hone their skills and feel like part of the team. Director of Athletics Mike Walker shared that “it is important for young men to be given opportunities to excel in sports at a young age so they can develop their God-given talents and exceed their potential.”
