Community Helpers Make a Difference

What do police officers, nurses and chefs have in common? They are all community helpers we have right here at SBS! In a themed learning unit, pre-kindergarten 3 students learned all about how certain jobs lend a hand and contribute to our community. 

Leading Courageously

“Community helpers week teaches our students to lead courageously by showing them what it's like to be a servant to others,” said PK3 teacher Edith Pinto. 

Learning about community helpers teaches our students why working in the community is important while also emphasizing the value of helping each other in the classroom. PK3 teachers shared that community helpers week taught students to lead courageously by watching others model kindness and how they care for each other by helping the community. 

Mrs. Pinto continued, “We learned about how having God in our hearts helps us to be brave and also gives us love to help one another, just like the community helpers.” 

Caring Community

The week kicked off with a visit to the school cafeteria and kitchen with Second Baptist Executive Chef Brian Duncan ‘06. PK3 teacher Jocelyn Rocha said her students loved walking through the kitchen, meeting the school baker and seeing everything behind the scenes. “We can't stop talking about Chef Duncan in our classroom!”

Other members of our caring community stepped up to share about their helping roles, including school nurse and Director of Health Services Heather Cornelius, Police Officer Jose Guillen and our community fire station with firefighter Steven Lee and his crew. The students in PK3, PK4 and Bridge were impressed by the firetruck and their special tools.

Show and Tell

To cap off a fun week, PK3 hosted a Community Helpers Show and Tell where students dressed up as their favorite community helpers. The teachers shared, “The highlight of our week was watching their faces as they each walked in Friday morning dressed in their community helper costumes. Most of our students were nurses for the day, and it was heartwarming to watch them care for each other with such nobility.”

Inspiring the Future

For PK3 teacher Araceli Babcock, it was heartwarming to see how her students took what they learned out into the real world. She said, “One parent shared a picture of Nico cleaning his sister's teeth at the dentist’s office. The next day he came in so excited to share how he was a community helper!”

All of the community helpers who came to visit our youngest learners at SBS made such a big impact. Mrs. Pinto said, “Their visits have sparked many fun conversations amongst my students about what they want to be when they grow up.”
