Commencement 2022
It’s easy to celebrate a class with so much spirit, charisma and drive. “You are an incredible group of young men and women who are ready and equipped to take on the world,” Head of School Jon Konzelman said to the Class of 2022. “I couldn’t be more proud to watch you soar into this next step.” The Commencement Ceremony exuded pride as the SBS family celebrated its next graduating class.
Cameron Kelley ‘22 gave the Invocation to begin the ceremony, thanking those who have supported the soon-to-be graduates. “On behalf of my class, I would like to thank all the family members, friends and faculty who have traveled both near and far to be here with us today. Your constant support, valuable lessons, ceaseless patience and unconditional love have made us the high school graduates who sit in front of you today.”
Following a special performance of “Amazing Grace” by the Select Vision Choir, the salutatorian and valedictorian gave their speeches. Salutatorian Jojo Kim ‘22 eloquently compared the four years of upper school to the movements of a symphony, ending with the grande finale: senior year.
Valedictorian Naomi Konuma ‘22 took the time to thank many influential people, from family to teachers, and also reflected on the unique qualities of the Class of 2022 and their years at SBS. Quoting upper school teacher Geoff Brooks, “A lot of success can be as simple as a choice,” said Noami. “Today, Class of 2022, as we knock on destiny’s door, I want to tell you that a lot of success can be as simple as a choice. You can choose to take that more challenging course. You can choose to do those extra reps. You can choose to go out of your way to serve others.” She concluded, “Class of 2022, let’s choose to conquer the days that lie ahead.”
Fittingly, this year’s commencement address was given by the valedictorian of the first graduating class of Second Baptist School, Dr. Ben Young ‘82. He reminded students to seek not a title, but a testimony, encouraging them to be “overcomers” who rely on the Lord throughout their lives. Following his address, Head of School Dr. Don Davis spoke of the many accolades and accomplishments of the Class of 2022. From state championships to national merit scholars, the list was long and impressive.
“Class of 2022, during your time at SBS you have left an indelible mark on our school,” said Dr. Davis. “You have lived out our values centering your life on Christ, pursuing excellence in all things, while caring deeply for one another. May you constantly be aware of God’s presence as you embark on this exciting new chapter. And remember, if you walk with Jesus you will never be alone.”
As the Class of 2022 processed across the stage, received their diplomas and tossed their caps into the air, they were reminded this is not the end, but a new beginning, and they’ll always have a home at Second Baptist.
Congratulations Class of 2022!
