The program highlights the importance of education, artistry and community, and prestigious awards are given to top-rated high school theatre programs in multiple categories, from costuming and lighting to musical direction.
Join us in congratulating the cast and crew of Bye Bye Birdie for the following nominations:
- Best Lead Actress – Emily Cagle ’20 for the role of Kim MacAfee
- Best Supporting Actress – Maddie Erwin ’20 for the role of Mrs. Mae Peterson
- Best Featured Performer – Zac Decker ’21 for the role of Harvey Johnson
- Best Ensemble
- Best Musical Direction
- Best Direction
“The best part about playing Kim MacAfee was interacting with several different characters in the show and portraying a hopeful romantic, immature daughter, obsessive teen, semi-faithful girlfriend and, finally, a grown up young lady who knows what she wants,” said Emily Cagle ’20. “I am so excited to perform as Kim MacAfee again at the Tommy Tune Awards and witness the talents of other actresses across Houston who have been nominated, as well. I'm honored to have the opportunity to represent my school and our show!”
According to Zac Decker ’21, “To prepare for the role of Harvey Johnson, my first thought was to stay away from the typical nerd character by adding an interesting twist. One of the ways I got into character was by singing all of the warm-ups in Harvey Johnson's scratchy, high-pitched voice." He continued, saying, “Mrs. Blades and Mrs. Westmoreland encouraged me to really be myself and have fun while doing it. They also added new moves and blocking that allowed me the opportunity to "wow” the crowd. I can't thank them enough!”
Stay tuned for the awards ceremony announcing this year’s winners on the Tommy Tune Awards Facebook account Tuesday, April 30.
