Be the Difference - Our 75th Year

Be the Difference - Our 75th Year

Eager students arrived on campus on a warm August morning, from the youngest Eagles starting pre-kindergarten 3, to the newly minted seniors, ready to begin a brand new school year with fresh haircuts, backpacks and school supplies. Teachers smiled broadly as parents walked young students to their new classrooms and friends old and new greeted one another, a joyous display of community. The whole school was abuzz with that classic first-day feel.

To most students, it was a normal first day, but for Second Baptist School, it was the seventy-fifth first day.

Seventy-five years ago, a small group of educators and fourteen students gathered for the inaugural year of Second Baptist School. Did they know that seventy-five years later we’d be opening our doors to over 1000 students, faculty and staff members? Or, as alumna and SBS parent Becca Schwinger ‘89 asked in Convocation, “Did they know that these halls would be where future leaders and innovators would be formed?”

For seventy-five years, Second Baptist School has partnered with parents. For seventy-five years, Second Baptist School has provided an education in Houston that unapologetically honors the Lord. For seventy-five years, Christ has been honored as young people are led to the Lord through dedicated teachers, coaches and a faithful school community.

As we enter this monumental year, Head of School Dr. Don Davis proclaimed our 2021-2022 school year theme, Be the Difference. Four seniors, Kendall Felton, Grace Lunsford, Jett Motley and Patrick Elder, introduced Convocation with a beautiful song, proclaiming boldly, “It’s time for us to do something.” Do something. Be someone. Be the Difference.

In the Worship Center filled with students, parents and faculty, Head Fellow Charley Schwinger ‘23 and Head Prefect Danielle Tackett ‘22 gave meaningful speeches, inspiring their fellow students to serve through encouraging others and to embrace being different. Danielle shared it is our faith that sets us apart at SBS, saying, “A different school honors each other through service. Let us be known for representing Jesus first. Let us be a community that’s different, one who cares for one another and stands for Christ.”

This year, SBS is not only celebrating seventy-five years but also opening three University-Model campuses around Houston, launching a campaign for a new lower school building and embarking on a strategic plan to impact students. Even more than that, each and every one of our students will experience excellent Christian education, a caring community and, it is our hope and prayer, a saving relationship with Jesus Christ that empowers them to Be the Difference in Houston and the world. #SBSdifference
