A Year With Frog and Toad

Audience members couldn’t stop smiling during the dynamic fifth and sixth grade musical, A Year with Frog and Toad. The enthusiastic ensemble filled The Hall so that the whole room was a stage full of snappy songs and humorous story-telling.

Middle school musical directors Liza Brown and Caroline Patterson ‘08 described the show as a “triumph for our fifth and sixth graders.” As fifth and sixth graders learn the basics of musical theatre and the process of putting on a production, it is the hope of their directors that they will continue in musical theatre during their time at SBS. Liza Brown summarizes, “This was a wonderful group of students. They were smart, kind, teachable and talented; what more could we ask for?” 

Caroline Patterson ‘08 elaborated, “Our ensemble was the driving force behind the show and did an incredible job of learning and refining their dances. The sixth grade cast was fearless and willing to make changes up until show time.” She goes on to share the importance of living biblically in theatre. “It is important in both rehearsals and performances to point our focus back to the Lord, and remind ourselves that our talents are gifts from Him. We exist to glorify Him with our talents.” Middle schoolers come away with growth, both theatrically and spiritually, after puttung on a successful show like A Year with Frog and Toad.

Lastly, a few students showed exceptional leadership in the show. Caroline Patterson said, “The snails (Warren Osowski ‘28, John Abbassi ‘28 and Meyer Petersen 28) were leaders in the cast and brought so much humor to the show while also encouraging and keeping spirits high.” JT Garrett ‘28 (Toad) was consistently daring and took his acting abilities to the next level for this show! Kannon Felton ‘28 and Audrey Hudson ‘28 created hilarious characters, Mouse and Turtle, and showed us that there is always room for more drama!”

"As a director,” finished Caroline Patterson, “I was thrilled to have such strong talent coupled with strength of character in the cast. Watch these kids over the next few years, because they are only going to get better from here!”
