A Roaring Success: Fifth and Sixth Grade Musical Makes History with Jungle Book Kids
Second Baptist School’s fifth and sixth grade musical, Jungle Book Kids, featured the largest cast ever to take the stage in this beloved middle school tradition. The cast brought the jungle to life through music, movement and storytelling, making this production burst with energy and character. With over 60 student participants, this year’s fifth and sixth grade musical was a testament to the growing enthusiasm for performing arts at Second Baptist School.
Based on the beloved Disney film and Rudyard Kipling's novel, Jungle Book Kids follows the journey of Mowgli, played by Harrison Angel ‘31, a boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle. With help from the wise panther Bagheera, played by Claire Zieben ‘31, and the carefree Baloo the Bear, played by Becks Crenshaw ‘31, Mowgli learns the importance of friendship, identity and belonging.
Directed by middle school theater teacher Caroline Patterson, Jungle Book Kids was more than just a performance—it was a celebration of student creativity and growth. Patterson, an SBS alumna, brings both passion and purpose to the stage. Her love for teaching and theater set the tone for a joyful and encouraging rehearsal process that invited students to take risks, build confidence and work together.
In a recent teacher feature written by SBS Communications Fellow Sarah Cela, Patterson shared, “I wish I could put into words the transformations I see in my classroom. I have seen students become goofy, bold and completely hilarious who are quiet and reserved in other classes.”
From Mowgli’s jungle journey to the infectious fun of “The Bare Necessities,” Jungle Book Kids was a roaring success—thanks to an invested cast and crew led by a teacher who believed in their potential.
