2019 Varsity Football Season Recap

This year, our SBS varsity football team went undefeated in their pre and regular season. According to Head Coach Terry Pirtle, “The 2019 football season was an incredible, historic season for our program. We won twelve games in a row and made it to the semi finals. We had many memorable moments along the way, including having six team members recognized at the end of the season Touchdown Awards Banquet.” These players were David Nunez ‘20, Josh Johnson ‘20, Dylan Cordell ‘20, Johnathan Gooden ‘20, Nate Dyman ‘20 and Jay Coleman ‘20.  Josh received the Offensive Player of the Year and Dylan received the Lineman of the Year. According to Offensive Player of the Year award winner Dylan Cordell ‘20, “My favorite part of football this season was being able to play next to my twin brother Connor. I think this season was special because it was my last time to be an Eagle, so being able to play with teammates, who I have been playing with since kindergarten, was both fun and bittersweet.”

A few notable player stats include...

  • Nate Dyman ‘20 (Linebacker) had 75 tackles.

  • Dylan Kim ‘20 (Linebacker) had 45 tackles.

  • David Nunez ‘20 (Cornerback) had 6 interceptions.

  • Jonathan Gooden ‘20 (Cornerback) had 5 interceptions and 5 defensive touchdowns with interceptions and punt returns.

  • Defense averaged 2.5 turnovers a game and only gave up and average of 9 points per game.

The season ended in the state semifinals with a 12-1 record.

Coach Pirtle also said, "This year, we won our seventh district championship in a row. The senior class has been 20-0 in district play over the past four seasons. They enjoyed a 23-3 record in the last two seasons. It was a great group of young men to coach this season, filled with unselfish, team oriented players. Our coaching staff was excellent once again led by Keith Page (Defensive Coordinator) and DJ Steward (Offensive Coordinator)."
